Upfront Cost Comparison
| Option | Cost per Sq Ft (Installed) | Typical Lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Sod | $1 – $3 | Ongoing (needs water, mowing, fertilizer) |
| Artificial turf | $5 – $15 | 15 – 20 years |
The Long-Term Math
Sod wins on upfront cost every time, but the ongoing cost of water, mowing, fertilizer, and pest treatment adds up over a 15-20 year horizon — especially with Florida's yard irrigation demands. Artificial turf's higher upfront investment often evens out or comes out ahead over that same period, particularly for smaller, high-visibility areas rather than large open lots.
Where Each Makes Sense
Sod remains the better choice for large lots, properties that will be resold (some buyers specifically want natural grass), and areas with good drainage where standing water isn't a concern. Artificial turf tends to make the most sense for smaller, high-traffic areas, dog runs, pool surrounds, and properties where the homeowner wants to eliminate mowing and irrigation maintenance entirely.
"I don't push turf on every job. For a big open lot, sod is still usually the better value. Where turf earns its keep is smaller areas where you're tired of mowing and watering a patch that isn't even that visible."
