Popcorn Ceiling Removal
| Job | Typical Cost |
|---|---|
| Popcorn ceiling removal (per sq ft) | $1 – $3 |
| Average 12x12 room (~144 sq ft) | $400 – $900 |
| Asbestos testing (pre-1980 homes) | Quoted separately before scraping begins |
If your home was built, or the ceiling was textured, before 1980, we test for asbestos before scraping anything. Older popcorn ceiling material commonly contained it, and Florida and EPA guidance both call for testing first on homes from that era — a step a surprising number of handyman services skip. Once cleared, we scrape, skim-coat smooth or match the existing texture (knockdown, orange peel, or skip trowel), and prime before paint.

Terminology
They're the same material. "Sheetrock" is technically a brand name (originally U.S. Gypsum's trademark) for gypsum drywall that became the common word for it, the same way people say Kleenex for facial tissue or Band-Aid for an adhesive bandage. Wallboard and gypsum board are the more technical, generic terms. Whichever word you search or use, it's the same job and the same material for us.
Water Damage & Mold
| Job | Typical Cost |
|---|---|
| Water damage repair (section replacement) | $300 – $1,200 |
| Small patch or hole repair | $150 – $400 |
Most drywall water damage in Florida traces back to roof or AC condensation leaks that stain and soften ceiling drywall before anyone notices, or Florida's humidity encouraging mold growth behind walls in bathrooms and poorly ventilated rooms. A stain that looks minor on the surface often means the drywall behind it has already softened — patching over it without addressing the moisture source just means doing the job twice. We identify the source first, then repair.
Common Questions
Popcorn ceiling removal typically runs $1–$3 per square foot, or roughly $400–$900 for an average 12x12 room, depending on texture and whether retexturing is included. If the home was built or textured before 1980, add the cost of asbestos testing first.

Yes. Sheetrock is a brand name for gypsum drywall that became the common word for it, similar to how people say Kleenex for facial tissue. Wallboard and gypsum board are the more technical terms for the same material.

Yes. Florida licenses a separate Gypsum Drywall Contractor specialty, but a Certified General Contractor is not required to subcontract drywall work out — it falls within the GC license's scope. D&Co Homes holds a Florida Certified General Contractor license (CGC1531095), which covers this work directly.
